Later (late 70's/80's) Grassi models apparently had much improved mechanical design, and are somewhat more sought after. I have a really old Ida Maria Grassi alto sax. I think they are considered higher quality than the other Italian brands of the time. Great tone (!), mediocre or old-fashioned mechanical design / ergonomics, quality should be good or at least "ok", not particularly durable design, not well known brand at all. I also happily play one, but I'm just an amateur. They didn't have much redeeming features over the famous Selmer horns they were clearly copying design-wise.Ĭheck out Eli Degibri, he plays the same or about the same era model professionally.
#IDA MARIA GRASSI SAXOPHONE FOR SALE PRO#
I have heard they were marketed as pro horns and quite expensive at the time they were made - but weren't very successfull in competing with Selmer Paris and such in similar price ranges. An easy way to recognise these saxes is to check the logo printed on the bell: it is no hand engraved, but laser engraved and it now shows Ida Maria Grassi Italy instead of the old Ida Maria Grassi Made in Italy logo. It's not highly valued, but certainly a decent horn.
